Circle Hopscotch
sidewalk/circlehopscotch
Location: City Hall (Pleasant and Commercial Streets)
Designer: Grace Julian-Murthy
The goal of this hopscotch installation is to create a playful, welcoming activity that children and adults can enjoy together on public sidewalks. Fruit plays an important role in many video games, where players collect it to earn points, gain rewards, or advance through the game. Featuring recognizable examples—such as Wumpa/mango fruit from Crash Bandicoot, cherries from Pac-Man, berries from Pokémon, and bananas from Donkey Kong—offers a playful nod to familiar games. The hopscotch path begins with a coin and continues through a colorful series of collectible fruits.
HOW TO PLAY!
Toss the marker: From the start line, toss your marker into the collect coin . It must land fully inside the circle without touching a line or bouncing out.
Hop through the course: Starting at the collect coin, hop on one foot from circle to circle. At the side-by-side pairs, land with one foot inside each circle.
Skip the marker: Always hop over the circle that holds your marker.
Turn around: Land on the final circle with both feet, turn around, and hop back toward the start.
Retrieve your marker: On the way back, stop in the circle just before your marker. Balancing on one foot, pick it up, then hop over that circle and out.
Advance to the next round: If you finish without a mistake, then it is the next player's turn. On your next turn, toss your marker into circle 2 and repeat.
